This bishop and saint gave his life for Christian unity, the Pope recalled.
Pope Francis on this February 5 called on the intercession of a saint who died four centuries ago to help Ukraine.
After praying the midday Angelus with pilgrims gathered in St. Peter's Square, he greeted a group from the Ukrainian community of Milan.
They made a pilgrimage to Rome for the fourth centenary of the death of Bishop St. Josaphat, who died in 1623. The bishop "gave his life for Christian unity," the Pope noted.
He added:
Beloved, I praise your efforts to welcome your compatriots who have fled the war. May the Lord, through the intercession of St. Josaphat, grant peace to the martyred people of Ukraine.
