When the maternity hospital in Mariupol, Ukraine, was bombed on Wednesday, there was a wave of horror throughout the world. The bombing killed three people, including a baby.
Thankfully Maryanna Podgurskaya, who was preparing to deliver her baby, managed to escape the building in one piece, and the photo of the heavily pregnant woman escaping made its way to many people's media feeds.
Happily, the mom gave birth yesterday to a healthy little girl, according to a tweet from a local journalist, Olga Tokariuk:
“I received an update from a relative of Marianna - a pregnant girl from Mariupol's bombed hospital. They were able to reach her on the phone briefly. Last night at 10pm, Marianna gave birth to a baby girl! They are ok, but it's very cold in Mariupol and the bombing doesn't stop.”
After all the drama of the last couple of weeks, the little girl's arrival seems like a little miracle, especially when you consider the terrible conditions in Mariupol where the mother and daughter are trapped.
The wonderful news comes at a time when medical and food supplies are running low in parts of the country, and people are fleeing for their lives. But hopefully this new little bundle is a joyful sign of what the future holds in Ukraine.
